In addition to rotating on its axis, the Earth also travels around the Sun in a path we call orbit.
The movement around the Sun along with its orbit is called revolution. The time taken for one journey around the Sun is called the period of revolution.
The period of Earth to revolve around the Sun is 365.24 days or one year. Because of these 0.24 days, February has 29 days every four years.
Earth's orbit is not a circle, it is slightly oval in shape.
It is a common misconception that the Earth's distance from the Sun is responsible for the change in seasons. Since Earth's orbit around the Sun is slightly elliptical, the Earth is slightly closer to the Sun in winter than it is in summer.
An imaginary line known as the equator divides the Earth into two hemispheres horizontally around the center of the Earth. The region above the equator is known as the Northern Hemisphere while the region below the Equator is called the Southern Hemisphere.
अपनी धुरी पर घूर्णन के अलावा, पृथ्वी भी सूर्य के चारों ओर एक पथ में यात्रा करती है जिसे हम ऑर्बिट कहते हैं।
अपनी ऑर्बिट के साथ सूर्य के चारों ओर की गति को परिक्रमण कहा जाता है। सूर्य के चारों ओर एक यात्रा के लिए जितना समय लगता है उसे परिक्रमण की अवधि कहा जाता है।
सूर्य के चारों ओर घूमने के लिए पृथ्वी की अवधि 365.24 दिन या एक वर्ष है। इन 0.24 दिनों के कारण ही हर चार साल में फरवरी में 29 दिन होते हैं।
पृथ्वी की कक्षा या ऑर्बिट एक सर्कल नहीं है यह आकार में थोड़ा अंडाकार है।
यह एक आम गलतफहमी है कि मौसम के बदलने के पीछे सूर्य से पृथ्वी की दूरी होती है। चूंकि सूर्य के चारों ओर पृथ्वी की ऑर्बिट थोड़ा अंडाकार है, इसलिए पृथ्वी सर्दियो में गर्मियों के मुकाबले सूर्य के थोड़ा ज्यादा करीब होती है।
एक काल्पनिक रेखा जिसे हम भूमध्य रेखा के नाम से जानते हैं, धरती के केंद्र के चारों ओर हॉरिजॉन्टल रूप से पृथ्वी को दो गोलार्धों में विभाजित करती है। भूमध्य रेखा के ऊपर का क्षेत्र उत्तरी गोलार्ध के रूप में जाना जाता है जबकि भूमध्य रेखा के नीचे का क्षेत्र दक्षिणी गोलार्ध कहा जाता है।
