Penicillium is a simple fungus. It is a type of fungicidal plant species. It is also called blue yee green mold. It grows on rotten vegetables, cut fruits, bread, rotten meat, leather etc. In particular, it grows very easily on lemons. The body of the Penicillium plant is made up of thin cotton-like compositions. These compositions are called hyphae. Its whole body is called mycelium. Its fungal network is divided into many branches. In this, there is an incremental reproduction by fission. Penicium contains a chain of conidia called spores, through which it reproduces asexually. An alkaloid called penicillin is obtained from the plant of Penicillium. It is a miraculous medicine. It is used in tuberculosis and various other diseases. Penicillin was invented by British scientist Sir Alexander Fleming in 1929. For this discovery he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1954. Penicillin was the first modern antibiotic. Several species of Penicillium are used in the cheese business to prepare cheese. It is also used in the synthesis of organic acids. It is also used to make alcohol. It is also used in preparing colours.

पेनिसिलयम एक साधारण फफूँद है। यह एक प्रकार का कवक श्रेणी का मृतजीवी वनस्पति है। इसे नीली यी हरी फफूँद भी कहा जाता है। यह सड़ी-गली सब्जियों, कटे हुए फलों, रोटी, सड़े हुए मांस, चमड़े आदि पर उगता है। विशेष कर यह नींबू के ऊपर बहुत ही सहज रूप से उगता है। पेनिसिलियम पौधे का शरीर पतले सूते जैसी रचनाओं से बना होता है। इन रचनाओं को हाइफी कहते हैं। इसके सारे शरीर को माइसेलियम कहते हैं। इसका कवक जाल अनेक शाखाओं में बँटा रहता है। इसमें विखंडन द्वारा वर्धी प्रजनन होता है। पेनिसियम में स्पोर नाम कोनिडिया की शृंखला पाई जाती है जिसके द्वारा यह अलैंगिक प्रजनन करता है। पेनिसिलियम के पौधे से पेनिसिलीन नामक उपक्षार प्राप्त होता है। यह एक चमत्कारी औषधि है। इसका व्यवहार तपेदिक तथा अन्य विभिन्न रोगों में किया जाता है। पेनिसिलीन का आविष्कार ब्रिटेन के वैज्ञानिक सर अलेक्जेंडर फ्लेमिंग ने १९२९ में किया था। इस खोज के लिए १९५४ में उन्हें चिकित्सा शास्त्र के नोबेल पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया।पेनिसिलीन पहला आधुनिक प्रतिजैविक था। पेनिसिलियम की कई जातियाँ पनीर-व्यवसाय में पनीर तैयार करने में व्यवहृत होती हैं। कार्बनिक अम्ल के संश्लेषण में भी इसका उपयोग होता है। एल्कोहल बनाने में भी इसका इस्तेमाल किये जाते हैं। रंग तैयार करने में भी इसका उपयोग होता है।
