This device is installed on the front panel of the driver in all vehicles. This device shows the speed of the train in kilometers per hour. The velocity of the train is displayed by an indicator mounted on the dial of the instrument. Most motor vehicles also have an odometer, which records the distance traveled by the vehicle. The speedometer in motors consists of a cable made of metal, which is connected by gears to the movement of the vehicle. When the vehicle accelerates, the gears rotate the inner part of the cable and the speedcup, which has a magnet in the device, moves as the inner part of the cable rotates. This rotating magnet produces a force pair on the speedcup. The independent motion of the speedcup is controlled by a force opposite to that of a spring. The speed of the speedcup is transferred by gears to the dial's indicators. When the train comes to a halt, the spring brings the indicator back to the zero mark on the dial.
यह यंत्र सभी गाड़ियों में चालक के सामने पैनल पर लगा होता है। यह यंत्र गाड़ी का वेग किलोमीटर प्रतिघंटा में प्रदर्शित करता है। गाड़ी का वेग यंत्र के डायल पर लगे हुए संकेतक द्वारा प्रदर्शित किया जाता है। अधिकतर मोटरगाड़ियों में एक ओडोमीटर भी होता है, जो गाड़ी द्वारा तय की गई दूरी को रिकॉर्ड करता है। मोटरों में लगे स्पीडोमीटर में धातु से बना एक केबल होता है, जिसका संबंध गियरों द्वारा गाड़ी के गति चालन से जोड़ दिया जाता है। जब गाड़ी गति करती है, तो गीयर केबल के अंदर के हिस्से को घुमाते हैं तथा यंत्र ‘स्पीडकप’ में एक चुंबक होता है, जो केबल के अंदर के हिस्से के घूमने के साथ ही गति करता है। घूर्णन करता हुआ यह चुंबक स्पीडकप पर एक बलयुग्म पैदा करता है। स्पीडकप की स्वतंत्र गति एक स्प्रिंग के विपरीत बल द्वारा नियंत्रित होती है। स्पीडकप की गति गियरों द्वारा डायल के संकेतकों को स्थानांतरित हो जाती है। जब गाड़ी रुक जाती है, तो स्प्रिंग संकेतक को डायल पर लिखे शून्य के निशान तक वापिस ले आता है।
