Megasthenes (Megasthenes / ασθένης, 304 BC – 299 BC) was an ambassador from Greece who visited the court of Chandragupta Maurya. In 305 BC, the Greek feudal lord Seleucus wanted to expand his kingdom again in India. India was attacked but it was forced to make a treaty. According to the treaty, an ambassador named Megasthenes came to the court of Chandragupta. He remained in the court of Chandragupta for many years. What he saw in India, he has described in detail in the book "Indica". He writes that the largest city of India is Pataliputra. This city is situated at the confluence of Ganga and Son. Its length is nine and a half miles and width is two and a half miles. The city is surrounded by a wall with 64 gates and 570 fortifications. Most of the houses in the city are made of wood. / मेगस्थनीज (Megasthenes / Μεγασθένης, 304 ईसापूर्व - 299 ईसा पूर्व) यूनान का एक राजदूत था जो चन्द्रगुप्त मौर्य के दरबार में आया था। यूनानी सामंत सिल्यूकस भारत में फिर राज्यविस्तार की इच्छा से 305 ई. पू. भारत पर आक्रमण किया था किंतु उसे संधि करने पर विवश होना पड़ा था। संधि के अनुसार मेगस्थनीज नाम का राजदूत चंद्रगुप्त के दरबार में आया था। वह कई वर्षों तक चंद्रगुप्त के दरबार में रहा। उसने जो कुछ भारत में देखा, उसका वर्णन उसने "इंडिका" नामक पुस्तक में किया है विस्तृत वर्णन किया है। वह लिखता है कि भारत का सबसे बड़ा नगर पाटलिपुत्र है। यह नगर गंगा और सोन के संगम पर बसा है। इसकी लंबाई साढ़े नौ मील और चौड़ाई पौने दो मील है। नगर के चारों ओर एक दीवार है जिसमें 64 द्वार और 570 दुर्ग बने हैं। नगर के अधिकांश मकान लकड़ी के बने हैं।
