Dr. Annie Wood Besant was born in the city of London in 1847. His father was English. Father was a doctor by profession. Apart from the medical profession, his father had a keen interest in mathematics and philosophy. His mother was an ideal Irish woman. Dr. Besant was deeply influenced by the religious views of his parents. Dr. Besant was only five years old at the time of his father's death. After the death of his father, due to lack of money, his mother took him to Harrow. There he received education under the patronage of Miss Marriott. Miss Marriott took them to France and Germany at a young age and learned the language of those countries. She returned to her mother at the age of 17. In his youth, he was introduced to a youth priest named Reverend Frank, and in 1867 he was married to Annie Budd. Married life was not happy due to disparity with husband's views. A narrow-minded husband could not keep up with a self-confident woman of extraordinary personality with an independent mind. By 1870 she had become the mother of two children. He lost his faith in God, the Bible and Christianity. The mutual subsistence of the clergy-husband and wife became difficult and finally in 1874 there was a separation. After the divorce, Annie Besant faced a serious financial crisis and had to earn money by writing articles related to independent thinking. / डॉ॰ एनी बेसेन्ट (Dr. Annie Wood Besant) का जन्म लन्दन शहर में १८४७ में हुआ। इनके पिता अंग्रेज थे। पिता पेशे से डाक्टर थे। पिता की डाक्टरी पेशे से अलग गणित एवं दर्शन में गहरी रूचि थी। इनकी माता एक आदर्श आयरिस महिला थीं। डॉ॰ बेसेन्ट के ऊपर इनके माता पिता के धार्मिक विचारों का गहरा प्रभाव था। अपने पिता की मृत्यु के समय डॉ॰ बेसेन्ट मात्र पाँच वर्ष की थी। पिता की मृत्यु के बाद धनाभाव के कारण इनकी माता इन्हें हैरो ले गई। वहाँ मिस मेरियट के संरक्षण में इन्होंने शिक्षा प्राप्त की। मिस मेरियट इन्हें अल्पायु में ही फ्रांस तथा जर्मनी ले गई तथा उन देशों की भाषा सीखीं। १७ वर्ष की आयु में अपनी माँ के पास वापस आ गईं। युवावस्था में इनका परिचय रेवरेण्ड फ्रैंक नामक एक युवा पादरी से हुआ और १८६७ में उसी से एनी बुड का विवाह भी हो गया। पति के विचारों से असमानता के कारण दाम्पत्य जीवन सुखमय नहीं रहा। संकुचित विचारों वाला पति असाधारण व्यक्तित्व सम्पन्न स्वतंत्र विचारों वाली आत्मविश्वासी महिला को साथ नहीं रख सके। १८७० तक वे दो बच्चों की माँ बन चुकी थीं। ईश्वर, बाइबिल और ईसाई धर्म पर से उनकी आस्था डिग गई। पादरी-पति और पत्नी का परस्पर निर्वाह कठिन हो गया और अन्ततोगत्वा १८७४ में सम्बन्ध-विच्छेद हो गया। तलाक के पश्चात् एनी बेसेन्ट को गम्भीर आर्थिक संकट का सामना करना पड़ा और उन्हें स्वतंत्र विचार सम्बन्धी लेख लिखकर धनोपार्जन करना पड़ा।
