James A. Jim Corbett (25 July 1875 – 19 April 1955) was an Indian writer and philosopher of Irish origin. He fought for human rights and also started the movement of protected forests. He had built a house at Kaladhungi near Nainital. This place still gives visitors the knowledge of the life of a man who was not only a hunter but also a patron, leather worker, photograph of wild animals and carpenter. He had killed many man-eating tigers in the Garhwal district of Uttarakhand, including the man-eating leopard of Rudraprayag. Jim Corbett had also got rid of the man-eating tigress who had killed 436 people in Champawat. But later on changing his views and seeing the decreasing number of tigers, he adopted only photography.

Jim did his early education from the Opening School in Nainital, later enrolled in St. Joseph's College, but due to poor financial condition, leaving his studies in the middle, at the age of 18, he went to Mokama Ghat (Bihar) and started working in the railway there.

Jim Corbett remained unmarried for life. Like him, his sister also did not marry. Both brothers and sisters were always together and shared each other's sorrows. / जेम्स ए. जिम कार्बेट (25 जुलाई 1875 - 19 अप्रैल 1955) आयरिश मूल के भारतीय लेखक व दार्शनिक थे। उन्होंने मानवीय अधिकारों के लिए संघर्ष किया तथा संरक्षित वनों के आंदोलन का भी प्रारंभ किया। उन्होंने नैनीताल के पास कालाढूंगी में आवास बनाया था। यह स्थान आज भी यहां आने वाले प्रर्यटकों को उस व्यक्ति के जीवन का ज्ञान कराता है जो न केवल एक शिकारी था बल्कि एक संरक्षक, चमड़े का कार्य करने वाला, जंगली जानवरों का फ़ोटो खीचने वाला तथा बढ़ई था। इन्होने उत्तराखण्ड के गढ़वाल जिले मे अनेक आदमखोर बाघों को मारा था जिनमें रुद्रप्रयाग का आदमखोर तेंदुआ भी शामिल था। चम्पावत में 436 लोगों का शिकार करने वाली आदमखोर बाघिन से भी जिम कार्बेट ने ही लोगों को छुटकारा दिलाया था। मगर बाद मे उनके विचार पलटने से और बाघों की घटती संख्या देखकर इन्होने सिर्फ छायाचित्रकारिता ही अपनाई।

जिम की प्रारम्भिक शिक्षा नैनीताल के ओपनिंग स्कूल से की बाद में सेंट जोसेफ कॉलेज में दाखिला लिया, लेकिन आर्थिक स्थिति ठीक नही होने के कारण पढाई बीच में छोड़कर 18 वर्ष की उम्र में मोकामा घाट (बिहार) जाकर वहाँ रेलवे में नौकरी करने लगे।

जिम कार्बेट आजीवन अविवाहित रहे। उन्हीं की तरह उनकी बहन ने भी विवाह नहीं किया। दोनों भाई-बहन सदैव साथ-साथ रहे और एक दूसरे का दु:ख बाँटते रहे।
