The Suez Canal is an artificial sea-level waterway in Egypt. This canal connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea, dividing Africa and Asia through the Isthmus of Suez. In 1858, Ferdinand de Lesseps formed the Suez Canal Company for the express purpose of building the canal. The canal was built under the auspices of the Ottoman Empire from 1859 to 1869. The canal was officially opened on 17 November 1869. In 1866, it used to take 36 hours to cross this canal, but today it takes less than 18 hours. It is currently under the control of the country of Egypt. The octroi tax on this canal is very high. Despite the length of this canal being twice the length of the Panama Canal, it has cost only 1/3 of the cost of the Panama Canal. / स्वेज़ नहर मिस्र में कृत्रिम समुद्र-स्तरीय जल मार्ग है। यह नहर स्वेज के इस्तमुस से होकर अफ्रीका और एशिया को विभाजित करते हुए भूमध्य सागर को लाल सागर से जोड़ता है। 1858 में, फर्डिनेंड डी लेसेप्स ने नहर के निर्माण के व्यक्त उद्देश्य के लिए स्वेज़ नहर कम्पनी का गठन किया। नहर का निर्माण तुर्क साम्राज्य के तत्वावधान में सन् 1859 से 1869 तक हुआ। नहर आधिकारिक रूप से 17 नवम्बर 1869 को खोली गई थी। 1866 ई. में इस नहर के पार होने में 36 घण्टे लगते थे पर आज 18 घण्टे से कम समय ही लगता है। यह वर्तमान में मिस्र देश के नियन्त्रण में है। इस नहर का चुंगी कर बहुत अधिक है। इस नहर की लम्बाई पनामा नहर की लम्बाई से दुगुनी होने के बाद भी इसमें पनामा नहर के खर्च का 1/3 धन ही लगा है।
