When calcium carbide comes in contact with moisture, it produces acetylene gas, which is similar in its effects to the natural ripening agent, ethylene. Acetylene accelerates the ripening process. / कुछ देशों में कृत्रिम रूप से फलों को पकाने के लिए कैल्शियम कार्बाइड का भी उपयोग किया जाता है। जब कैल्शियम कार्बाइड नमी के संपर्क में आता है, तो यह एसिटिलीन गैस पैदा करता है, जो प्राकृतिक पकने वाले एजेंट, एथिलीन के प्रभाव के समान होता है। एसिटिलीन पकने की प्रक्रिया को तेज करता है।
