Garibi Hatao (Meaning “Abolish Poverty” in Hindi) was the theme and slogan of Indira Gandhi’s 1971 election bid. The slogan and the proposed anti-poverty programs that came with it were designed to give Gandhi an independent national support, based on rural and urban poor. The fifth plan prepared and launched by D.D. Dhar proposed to achieve two main objectives viz, ‘removal of poverty’ (Garibi Hatao) and ‘attainment of self reliance’, through promotion of high rate of growth, better distribution of income and a very significant growth in the domestic rate of savings. / ग़रीबी हटाओ (हिंदी में “गरीबी मिटाओ” का अर्थ) इंदिरा गांधी की 1971 की चुनावी बोली का विषय और नारा था। इसके साथ आए नारे और प्रस्तावित गरीबी-विरोधी कार्यक्रम गांधी को ग्रामीण और शहरी गरीबों पर आधारित एक स्वतंत्र राष्ट्रीय समर्थन देने के लिए तैयार किए गए थे। पांचवीं योजना डी.डी. धर ने दो मुख्य उद्देश्यों को प्राप्त करने का प्रस्ताव रखा, जैसे ‘गरीबी हटाना’ (गरीबी हटाओ) और ‘आत्मनिर्भरता की प्राप्ति’, विकास की उच्च दर को बढ़ावा देने, आय के बेहतर वितरण और बचत की घरेलू दर में एक बहुत ही महत्वपूर्ण वृद्धि के माध्यम से।
