In every district there are civil courts and criminal courts. Under criminal courts, there are courts of the District and Sessions Judge, Additional Sessions Judges, Assistant Sessions Judge and the courts of the first class magistrates. The District and Sessions judge may pass any legal sentence but a death sentence is subject to confirmation by the High Court. An Assistant-sessions Judge has the power to sentence a person to ten years imprisonment. A first class Magistrate may pass a sentence of imprisonment not exceeding two years or a fine not exceeding one thousand rupees. / हर जिले में दीवानी अदालतें और फौजदारी अदालतें हैं। आपराधिक अदालतों के तहत, जिला और सत्र न्यायाधीश, अतिरिक्त सत्र न्यायाधीश, सहायक सत्र न्यायाधीश और प्रथम श्रेणी मजिस्ट्रेट की अदालतें हैं। जिला और सत्र न्यायाधीश कोई भी कानूनी सजा दे सकता है लेकिन मौत की सजा उच्च न्यायालय द्वारा पुष्टि के अधीन है। एक सहायक-सत्र न्यायाधीश के पास किसी व्यक्ति को दस साल के कारावास की सजा देने की शक्ति होती है। एक प्रथम श्रेणी मजिस्ट्रेट दो वर्ष से अनधिक कारावास या एक हजार रुपए से अधिक के जुर्माने की सजा दे सकता है।
