Osmium (Hint: Os; atomic weight 190; atomic number 76) is a chemical element. It is the heaviest of the known substances. Osmium is one of the six metals in the platinum group and is the most vulnerable. This was first done by Tenant in 1804 AD. Obtained from Osmiridium. When osmiridium is melted with sodium chloride in a stream of chlorine gas, osmium tetrachloride is formed, which flies and collects in one place. On reaction with ammonium chloride (NH4)2OsCl6 is formed, which on heating in the absence of air gives osmium metal. / ओस्मियम (Osmium ; संकेत : Os; परमाणुभार 190 ; परमाणुसंख्या 76) एक रासायनिक तत्व है। यह ज्ञात पदार्थों में सबसे भारी है।आस्मियम, प्लैटिनम समूह की छह धातुओं में से एक है और इन सबसे अधिक दुष्प्राप्य है। इसको सबसे पहले टेनांट ने 1804ई. में आस्मिइरीडियम से प्राप्त किया। आस्मिइरीडियम को सोडियम क्लोराइड के साथ क्लोरीन गैस की धारा में पिघलाने पर आस्मियम टेट्राक्लोराइड बनता है जो उड़कर एक जगह एकत्र हो जाता है। इसकी अमोनियम क्लोराइड के साथ प्रतिक्रिया कराने पर (NH4)2 OsCl6 बन जाता है, जिसको वायु की अनुपस्थिति में तप्त करने पर आस्मियम धातु प्राप्त होती है।
