The caste system is a system of division of labour and power in human society. It is a system of social stratification, and a basis for affirmative action. Historically, it defined communities into thousands of endogamous hereditary groups called Jatis. The Jatis were grouped by the Brahmanical texts under the four well-known caste categories (the varnas): viz Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras. / जाति व्यवस्था मानव समाज में श्रम और शक्ति के विभाजन की एक प्रणाली है। यह सामाजिक स्तरीकरण की एक प्रणाली है, और सकारात्मक कार्रवाई का आधार है। ऐतिहासिक रूप से, इसने समुदायों को हजारों अंतर्विवाही वंशानुगत समूहों में परिभाषित किया, जिन्हें जाति कहा जाता है। जातियों को ब्राह्मण ग्रंथों द्वारा चार प्रसिद्ध जाति श्रेणियों (वर्णों) के तहत समूहीकृत किया गया था: ब्राह्मण, क्षत्रिय, वैश्य और शूद्र।
